The writing has been compared to that of Jane Austen, one of Rowling's favourite authors; Roald Dahl, whose works dominated children's stories before the appearance of Harry Potter; and the ancient Greek story-teller Homer. While some commentators thought the book looked backward to Victorian and Edwardian boarding school stories, others thought it placed the genre firmly in the modern world by featuring contemporary ethical and social issues, as well as showing overcoming obstacles like bullying. The Harry Potter series has been used as a source of object lessons in educational techniques, sociological analysis, and marketing.

Tuttua ja turvallista velhoilua

Harry Potter.

Nyt kun esittelyt on tehty, voimme siirtyä itse kirjaan. Nykysilmin katsottuna tämä vaikuttaa viattomalta: helppolukuista kirjallisuutta lapsille, jossa hyvyys voittaa pahuuden, oikeus päihittää vääryyden ja muita välttämättömiä valkoisia valheita, joita kerrotaan lapsille. Tässä ollaan enemmän velkaa Roald Dahlin saduille kuin fantasiakirjallisuuden kaavamaisuuksille. En siten ihmettele, että tästä puhuttiin aikoinaan kirjallisuuden pelastajana kun tämä sai lapset (tai enemmänkin heidän vanhempansa) lukemaan. Vanhemmilla kun on suuremmat edellytykset valita lastensa kirjat, joten kirjan sisältö läpäisee helposti valtaosan hajutestin.

Omalta osaltani Viisasten kivi oli kohtalaisen helppolukuinen lukukokemus. Kerronnassa on useita nuorisokirjallisuuden kliseitä, että niihin tottuneet saanevat turvareaktion. Käänteet olivat joko ennakoitavissa kaukaa tai sitten väkinäisen oloisia. Ei tässä mitään suurempaa vikaa ole, mutta olisiko tämä syrjäyttänyt nuoruuteni Tolkienin Hobitin, sitä epäilen suuresti.
