Cool Magic System, Obnoxious Protagonist

I tried reading this a few years ago and stopped somewhere around the 200-page mark because I hated Vin. The magic system is fascinating and well considered, but that wasn't enough to keep me engaged. I picked it up again last week, hoping I could make it through this time. I ran into the same problem, finding Kelsier compelling and Vin aggravating. Knowing that Vin is the protagonist and Kelsier doesn't get much focus in later books (yes, I looked up spoilers!) didn't help matters. I gave it two good tries, but it just isn't for me.
